A Tibetan Rug Factory

5 Facts about Rug Making in Tibet

1. Tibetans have been weaving and using carpets as bedding, saddle blankets and meditation mats in monasteries for centuries.
2. In 1959, the Chinese forced Tibetans to migrate through the Himalayan mountains in search of a new home and many settled in the Kathmandu valley where, with support of the Swiss government they created a cottage industry of rug weaving based on ancient traditions and techniques.
3. Tibetan rugs are primarily made from tibetan highland sheep's virgin wool.
4. The Himalayan wool is often transported over the Himalayas by yaks.
5. The process of making tibetan rugs is unique in the sense that almost about everything is done by hand.

or if you string a few together, a proper rug.

We advise you to keep your dog away from it though.

The Laundry Rug

Are you the sort of person who throws all their dirty clothes on the floor?

Yes? You make us sick you filthy slob. Get off this blog.

You're still here. We should have known that a sluggard like you would be disobedient, too. Sigh. Well if you must throw your clothes all over the floor, why not use the Laundry Rug, which turns your dirty washing into a showpiece for the room?

First, take your Laundry Rug out of its packet...

...lay it on the floor and throw all your dirty washing onto it...

...then fold it up and take the whole lot to the laundry.

Or even better - grow up, get a hair cut and a real job sonny Jim and put your laundry in the darn washing basket. Sheesh.

CityScape Rugs

Walk across Tokyo or Stockholm in the comfort of your own living room.
Tokyo Rug (left) and Stockholm Rug (right) are from the Cityscapes series by Malin Palm. The rugs are hand-tufted and made of 100% wool. Nice. We like that you can customise their size, too.

The layers of patterning creates raised surfaces which feel great underfoot.

Where Fashion Illustration Meets Rug Design

With a background in fashion illustration, designer Liselotte Watkins brings a fresh, exciting style to the world of rug design. Her 100% wool rugs are bold, modern and would add urban funk into any interior.

These rugs capture something of the millennium zeitgeist kind of like Amy Helfand does with her rugs. Let's hope these two meet up in the future and do some rug designing as a team. Like tag-team wrestling, but with rug design.

Amazed Rugs

Rugs as a work of art is a concept we're very familiar with here, but we were still blown away by this selection from the suitably named "Amazed" Rug Design Company - from top to bottom we have the Labryinth, Zen Garden and the Crop Circle rugs. The rugs and carpet, by designer duo Adeleine and Dudley Edwards, follow the Japanese tradition of creating harmony between exterior nature and interior architecture and use natural materials such as wool, jute, hemp and flax; Sir Paul McCartney & Ringo star are said to be big fans.

Britney Spears & the Bear Skin Rug

Although this statue of Britney Spears about to give birth to her first son did not escape the media, the bear skin rug she is clutching with her "water retaining" hands has largely gone unnoticed. Odd when you think that it's an expression of "pro-life" - what could be more anti-life than lying on an animal's corpse? We recommend Humane Trophies if you decide you'd like to squat on something furry...
